The Duke of Cumberland defeated Charles “Bonnie Prince Charlie” Stuart at Culloden Moor, ending the Jacobite Revolt and securing Scotland as part of the British dominion until the present day. The subsequent persecution at the hands of English troops caused a rush of Scot immigration to the Southern colonies.

• 1528 – Spanish Adventurer Pánfilo de Narváez sighted Indian houses near Tampa Bay, Florida. He anchored his boats in the area, but the Indians had abandoned their village.

• 1550 – King Charles V ordered a stop to the conquests of Indian land.

• 1789 - George Washington left Mount Vernon enroute to New York City for inauguration as the first President of the United States under the US Constitution

• 1861 – North Carolina state troops occupied Forts Caswell and Johnston.

• 1862 - The District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act abolished slavery in DC and provided compensation only to Union slaveholders.

• 1865 – The Battle of Columbus, Georgia.

• 1868 – Only a portion of Louisiana’s voters approved a reconstruction constitution. Most of the state’s white citizens were disenfranchised by the Reconstruction Acts.

• 1947 – America’s worst harbor explosion occurred in Texas City, Texas, when the French ship Grandcamp, carrying ammonium nitrate fertilizer, caught fire and blew up, devastating the town. Another ship, the Highflyer, exploded the following day. The explosions and resulting fires killed more than 500 people and left 200 others missing.

• 1990 – The U.S. Supreme Court rejected an appeal from Dalton Prejean, a mentally handicapped man condemned to death for murdering a Louisiana state trooper in 1977.

• 2007 – Deranged student Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people and injured 23 others before committing suicide at Virginia Tech University. It remains one of the deadliest mass murders in modern American history.

U.S. President Lincoln issued a public proclamation calling for seventy-five thousand volunteers to escalate the war he had started. This call was made without the consent of Congress, which was a breach of the Constitution. It signaled another act of aggression against the peaceful secession of the Confederate states.

• 1528 – Pánfilo de Narváez, a Spanish conquistador, arrived in Florida with 350 men and received a hostile reception from local Indians.

• 1715 – The Pocotaligo Massacre triggered the start of the Yamasee War in colonial South Carolina.

• 1777 – Shawnee warriors attacked American settlers at Boonesborough, Kentucky, but the stockade resisted the Indian attack.

• 1861 – North Carolina state troops occupied Fort Macon.

• 1864 - Federal troops occupied Camden, Arkansas on the Red River campaign and were immediately besieged.

• 1865 – U.S. President Abraham Lincoln died from wounds received from an assassin.

• 1879 – Victorio and 39 Warm Springs Apache followers who had surrendered escaped at Ojo Caliente, New Mexico due to fears of being sent to a reservation and returned to Mexico.

• 1889 – American painter and muralist, Thomas Hart Benton was born in Neosho, Missouri.

• 1947 - Jackie Robinson of Cairo, Georgia broke the MLB ‘color barrier’ with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

U.S. President Abraham Lincoln was shot and mortally wounded presumably by actor John Wilkes Booth while attending the comedy “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C.

• 1528 – Spanish conquistador Panfilo de Narvaez, with 4 or 5 ships, and approximately 400-500 men, sighted land, on the western coast of Florida.

• 1614 – John Rolfe (not John Smith) married Pocahontas at Jamestown, Virginia.

• 1780 – During the Siege of Charleston, the Loyalist British Legion, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton, surprised and defeated an American force stationed at Monck’s Corner, South Carolina.

• 1861 – Confederate forces occupied Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina after federal troops surrendered and are allowed to leave peacefully.

• 1881 – The “Four Dead in Five Seconds” gunfight erupted in El Paso, Texas.

• 1955 – Fats Domino recorded “Ain’t That a Shame,” which became the first of dozens of hits to cross over from R&B to the pop charts.

• 1978 – WRR-AM in Dallas, Texas changed its call letters to KAAM.

• 1980 – The first Cuban refugees of the Mariel boatlift sailed to Florida.

Major Robert Anderson’s Federal garrison surrendered Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. Confederate and South Carolina state troops allowed them to leave peacefully. The only federal casualty of the Fort Sumter incident occurred when a federal soldier was killed when a cannon exploded firing a salute at the lowering of the fort’s flag.

• 1743 - Thomas Jefferson was born in Shadwell, Virginia.

• 1846 – President James Polk asked Congress to approve the creation of separate reservations for the old settler and new emigrant factions of the Cherokee Nation, since the two sides were engaged in a heated dispute over control of the tribal government.

• 1865 – Federal troops occupied Raleigh, North Carolina.

• 1873 – Approximately 60 black Louisianans are killed in the Colfax riots in Grant Parish.

• 1918 – An electrical fire killed 38 mental patients at the Oklahoma State Hospital.

• 1943 - The Jefferson Memorial was dedicated in Washington, DC on the 200th anniversary of Jefferson’s birth

• 1944 – South Carolina rejected black suffrage.

• 1970 - An oxygen tank exploded aboard the Apollo 13 and crippled the spacecraft enroute to the Moon. Houston engineers, astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haisebrainstormed solutions to get the crew safely home.

• 1997 - Tiger Woods won the Masters Tournament in Augusta, becoming the youngest and the first African American winner.

Knowing that a federal invasion fleet was on the way, General P.G.T. Beauregard ordered Confederate and South Carolina troops to begin the bombardment of Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor, South Carolina.

• 1675 – British Colonial Governor of Virginia, Richard Bennett died.

• 1776 – North Carolina adopted the Halifax Resolution for independence from Great Britain.

• 1836 – A force nearly a thousand Seminole warriors unsuccessfully attacked a blockhouse near the mouth of the Withlacoochee River, held by 50 volunteers from the Florida militia.

• 1862 – “The Great Locomotive Chase,” Andrews’s raid on the Western & Atlantic Rail Road in Georgia disrupted rail service across the state.

• 1862 – Federal troops occupied Fort Pulaski, Georgia.

• 1864 – General Nathan B. Forrest took Fort Pillow, Tennessee. Federal General James R. Chalmers abandoned his troops, but later claimed that Confederate soldiers committed atrocities against his men.

• 1869 – The North Carolina reconstruction legislature passed an anti-Ku Klux Klan Law.

• 1872 – The Jesse James gang was blamed for a $1,500 bank robbery in Columbia, Kentucky that left one man dead.

• 1945 – The 32nd U.S. president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt died of a cerebral hemorrhage at Warm Springs, Georgia at age 63. Vice-President Harry S. Truman of Missouri became president.

• 1981 - Space Shuttle Columbia was launched as the first orbital flight of NASA’s Space Shuttle program from Cape Canaveral.

On this date in 1837…

As part of the treaty signed on 6 March 1837, the Seminole were to report to Tampa Bay no later than this date for transport to the Indian Territory. However, General Jessup had already reneged on key provisions of the treaty and the Indians doubted the United States would live up to the rest of the agreement. Many Seminole simply disappeared into the woods and swamps and refused deportation.

• 1796 – Knife-fighter, adventurer, and Alamo hero James Bowie was born in Logan County, Kentucky.

• 1806 – Confederate General and Episcopalian Bishop Leonidas Polk was born in Raleigh, North Carolina.

• 1871 – Apache warriors raided the San Xavier mission, south of Tucson, to steal livestock.

• 1929 – The Sneed tornado obliterated several communities in Arkansas. The destruction was so thorough that casualties were inestimable and the towns were never rebuilt. To date, this remains the only confirmed F-5 twister to strike the state.

• 1979 – A devastating tornado touched down in Wichita Falls, Texas, killing 42 people during the Red River Valley Tornado Outbreak.

Overwhelming firepower and numbers left Confederate General Robert E. Lee little choice but to surrender the remaining 26,765 men of the Army of Northern Virginia to federal General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

• 1585 – Sir Richard Grenville’s fleet departed Plymouth, England with five main ships: the Tiger (Grenville’s), the Roebuck, the Red Lion, the Elizabeth, and the Dorothy to establish Roanoke Colony.

• 1682 – French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle claimed the lower Mississippi Valley for France.

• 1947 – An estimated F-5 tornado killed 169 people and injured 1,300 in Texas and Oklahoma.

• 1959 - NASA introduced the original ‘Mercury Seven’ astronauts in Houston, Texas.

Creek Indian soldier Ernest Childers of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor during WWII for his courageous actions on September 22, 1943 near Oliveto, Italy while serving as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 45th Infantry Division. Childers single-handedly killed two enemy snipers, attacked two machine gun nests, and captured an artillery observer that had been directing fire against his unit.

• 1818 - At the first meeting of Baton Rouge’s Board of Selectmen, they imposed a $5 tax on peddlers and beggars.

• 1861 – Virginia sent a three-man peace commission to Washington to diffuse the growing secession crisis. U.S. President Lincoln refused to meet with the commissioners.

• 1865 – Confederates routed federal troops at the Battle of Sabine Cross Roads at Mansfield, Louisiana

• 1861 – Georgia state troops seized the U.S. mint at Dahlonega, Georgia.

• 1972 - Ponchatoula, Louisiana held it’s first annual Strawberry Festival.

• 1974 - Hank Aaron breaks Babe Ruth’s home run record

• 2000 – Nineteen U.S. Marines were killed when a V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft crashed near Marana, Arizona.

Chickamauga Chief Captain Bench, and his followers attacked settlements on the Holston River in Tennessee, killing four people. Formerly a friend to European settlers, Bench left a declaration of war beside the bodies in retaliation for the death of his great uncle, Old Tassel, at the hands of whites.

• 1818 – Troops commanded by General Andrew Jackson seized the Spanish fort at St. Marks in Florida during the First Seminole War.

• 1862 – Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston was killed at the Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee.

• 1865 – The Battle of Sayler’s Creek, Virginia.

• 1875 – Cheyenne leader Black Horse is killed while attempting to escape being sent to prison in St. Augustine, Florida for his part in the uprisings in Indian Territory, and Texas. Almost half of the Indians flee the Cheyenne and Arapaho Agency at Fort Reno in west-central Indian Territory.

• 1936 – An estimated F-4 tornado killed more than 200 people and injured 1,800 in and around Gainesville, Georgia.

• 1968 – HemisFair 1968 opened in San Antonio, Texas.

• 2012 – An F-18 Hornet fighter jet crashed into side of apartment building in Virginia with no fatalities.

Daniel Decatur Emmett first performed DIXIE in public at Mechanics’ Hall in New York City. The song is an immediate hit in the north several months before it is heard in the South.

• 1840 – Comanche Chief Piava arranged a Prisoner exchange with the residents of San Antonio, Texas. Two captives from each side were released.

• 1861 – U.S. President Lincoln ordered a fleet to reinforce Fort Sumter, committing the first of several acts of war against the Confederate States of America.

• 1865 - US President A. Lincoln visited the fallen city of Richmond.

• 1932 - Oklahoma gangster Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd killed a police enforcement officer in Ohio.

Bob Ford was the trigger man when he and his brother Charlie assassinated Jesse Woodson James in his home at St. Joseph, Missouri. The fame, money, and notoriety they sought never materialized and both died tragic deaths.

• 1730 – In modern day Franklin, North Carolina, Sir Alexander Cuming performed a sham ceremony pronouncing Chief Moytoy as the “Emperor of the Cherokee,” in order to get the Cherokee acknowledge King George II of England as sovereign.

• 1860 - The Pony Express starts delivering mail by horse and rider relay teams between St. Joseph, Missouri and Sacramento, California

• 1865 – Richmond and Petersburg, Virginia were occupied by yankee troops.

• 1974 – The “Xenia” tornado outbreak spawned 148 known tornadoes across the South in a 24-hour span.

After the Battle of Fort Gregg, Virginia, the city of Richmond was abandoned. The Confederate government retreated to Danville, Virginia where President Jefferson Davis issued his last official order.

• 1513 – According to some sources, on this date Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de Leon discovered Florida and landed south of the St. John’s River to claim Florida for Spain, however the exact date is still debated.

• 1863 – Food riots broke out in Richmond, Virginia.

• 1891 – Sovereign Grand Master of the Southern Jurisdiction of Scottish Rite Freemasonry, Confederate General, and Confederate Indian Commissioner, Albert Pike died at the Scottish Rite House of the Temple in Washington DC.

• 1931- A teenage girl struck out both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig at a New York Yankees exhibition game in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

• 2006 – In an outbreak of more than 60 tornadoes Tennessee was hardest hit, with 29 people killed.

Clyde Barrow killed two young highway patrolmen, H. D. Murphy and Edward Bryant Wheeler, at the intersection of Route 114 and Dove Road near Grapevine, Texas. Bonnie Parker‘s role in the murders was greatly exaggerated, but it helped turn public perception against the gang for good and led to their eventual demise.

• 1536 – Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca and a few men reached San Miguel in New Galicia, after being shipwrecked in Galveston, Texas and marching across the continent to California.

• 1789 - The US House of Representatives fist achieved quorum and began conducting official business under the US Constitution.

• 1823 – Confederate General Simon Bolivar Buckner was born in Hart County, Kentucky.

• 1863 – Confederate General Stand Watie was authorized to raise his own brigade. The Cherokee leader was the only Native American to serve as a General in the War of Northern Aggression on either side.

• 1865 – Federal forces achieved a decisive breakthrough at the Battle of Five Forks, shattering Confederate defenses southwest of Petersburg.

• 1867 – Blacks first voted in the municipal election in Tuscumbia, Alabama.

• 1868 – In Virginia, The Hampton Institute was established.

• 1936 – Famed mobster Charles “Lucky” Luciano was arrested in Hot Springs, Arkansas on a criminal warrant from New York.

• 2004 – U.S. President George W. Bush signed the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, making it a crime to harm a fetus during an assault on a pregnant woman.

• 1980 – U.S. President Jimmy Carter of Georgia deregulated the banking industry.

• 2023 - A deadly tornado outbreak struck Arkansas, including one with a 37 mile path through a heavily populated section of Little Rock. Miraculously, there was only one fatality.

• 1971 – U.S. Army Lt. William Calley Jr., of Miami, Florida was found guilty of the premeditated murder of at least 22 Vietnamese civilians at the My Lai massacre in Vietnam on March 16, 1968 and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

• 1979 – The Committee on Assassinations Report issued by U.S. House of Representatives stated the assassination of President John F. Kennedy was the result of a conspiracy.

• 1992 – Arkansas Governor and Democrat presidential front-runner Bill Clinton said “I didn’t inhale and I didn’t try it again” in reference to when he had experimented with marijuana.

• 1998 – Tennessee won the woman’s college basketball championship over Louisiana after setting a NCAA record with regular season record or 39-0.
