Brice's Crossroads – Today In Southern History

On this date in 1864…
Confederate cavalry commanded by General Nathan Bedford Forrest routed a superior federal force at the Battle of Brice’s Crossroads, Mississippi, capturing 1,600 federal troops, 16 cannon, and a supply train.

1610 – Thomas West, the third Baron de La Mar, was appointed governor of Virginia colony.
1776 – The Continental Congress appointed a committee to write a Declaration of Independence.
1854 – The U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland held its first graduation.
1861 – Confederate troops under General John Bankhead Magruder repulsed the federal forces of Benjamin “Beast” Butler at Big Bethel, North Carolina.
1925 – The state of Tennessee adopted a new biology text book that excluded the theory of evolution.
1933 – Bonnie Parker was severely burned in a car accident with Clyde Barrow on a rural road in north Texas.
1972 - Elvis Contined his concert series at Madison Square Garden. His afternoon show was recorded and released as live album, “An Afternoon in the Garden”
2004 – Georgia native, Ray Charles, the blind Grammy winning singer who blended gospel with the blues and became a music legend, died in Beverly Hills, California at the age of 73.
