George Washington was raised as a Master Mason. Washington would later become the first Grand Master of American Freemasons.

1897 - Black businsessman Henry A. Rucker is appointed Collector of Internal Revenue for Georgia
1901 – Jazz trumpeter and music legend, Louis Armstrong, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana.
1914 - US President Woodrow Wilson issued a “Proclamation of Neutrality” aimed to keep the United States out of the war in Europe
1934 – Mel Ott of Gretna, Louisiana became the first major league baseball player to score six runs in a single game.
1936 - Jesse Owens of Oakville, Alabama won his second gold medal at the Berlin Olympics with an Olympic record in the long jump final
1948 - A five-day filibuster of Southern senators succeeds in maintaining America’s poll tax
1956 - At a NASCAR Grand National race in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Lee Petty stoped his car on lap 32, climbed the flagstand, and waved a red flag halting the race due to hazardous dusty conditions
1964 – The bodies of three civil rights workers were discovered in an earthen dam outside Philadelphia, Mississippi.
1972 – Anti-Southern zealot Arthur Bremer was sentence to 63 years for shooting Alabama Governor and presidential candidate George Wallace.
1980 Hurricane Aline killed 272 people in Texas and the Caribbean.
1984 – Carl Lewis of Birmingham, Alabama won a gold medal in the Los Angeles Olympics.
1996 – The 26th Summer Olympic Games closed at Atlanta, Georgia.
2022 - Infowars radio host Alex Jones of Dallas, Texas was ordered to pay $4.1 million to parents of a child killed in the Sandy Hook massacre after Jones claimed it was a hoax
