Spain ceded Louisiana to France in a secret treaty that negated the Treaty of Fontainebleau and led to the Louisiana Purchase three years later.

1962 – James Meredith became first black student to attend the University of Mississippi
1967 - Richard Petty chalked up the tenth cosecutive win on his historic streak at the Wilkes 400 at North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina
1971 – Walt Disney World opened in Orlando, Florida
1982 – Disney’s EPCOT Center opened in Orlando, Florida
1986 - The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, Georgia was dedicated
2024 - Okaloosa County, Florida, commissioners agreed to purchase the record-holding ocean liner SS United States to sink in the Gulf of America as an artificial reef and diving attraction
