On this date in 1700…
Sieur d’Iberville, Pierre le Moyne visited the Pascagoula Indian village, one day’s walk from French Biloxi. The Indians have been hit hard by diseases brought by Europeans, but d’Iberville is still impressed by the beauty of the Pascagoula women.

1861 - Maryland’s House of Delegates votes against seceding from Union after key members are imprisoned by the Lincoln government
1862 – Federal troops under Admiral David Farragut occupied New Orleans, Louisiana.
1872 - The James’ gang is blamed for robbing a bank in Columbia, Kentucky of $1,500 and killing bank employee Robert Martin
1888 - Explorer and Confederate veteran Henry Morton Stanley met the Emin Pasha in the Congo
1945 - Conscientious objector Desmond Doss Lynchburg, Virginia saved 75 wounded soldiers in the Battle of Hacksaw Ridge on Okinawa. He was later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor
1956 - WWBT TV channel 12 in Richmond, VA began broadcasting
1957 - The first military nuclear power plant dedicated at Fort Belvoir, Virginia
1967 – Muhammad Ali (formerly known as Cassius Clay) was stripped of his world boxing title after refusing to submit to the U.S. military draft.
1974 – U.S. President Richard Nixon announced the release of edited transcripts of White House tape recordings relating to the Watergate scandal.
1975 – In Operation Frequent Wind, the U.S. evacuated U.S. citizens from Saigon before an expected North Vietnamese takeover.
1992 - Voting ends on the choice of designs for the Elvis Presley postage stamp
2017 - Three tornadoes hit near Dallas, Texas, killing five people
2023 - Country music legend, Willie Nelson performed at the first of two-night 90th birthday concerts for himself at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles
