The U.S. Congress established the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee and North Carolina on what was once Cherokee land.

1836 – Arkansas became the 25th U.S. state.
1851 - Jacob Fussell, a Baltimore dairyman, sets up first ice-cream factory
1862 - Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart completed his ride around McClellan’s federal army
1863 – The Battle of Winchester, Virginia.
1864 - General Robert E. Lee’s home area in Arlington, Virginia was designated a federal military cemetery
1887 - Confederate veteran Sir Henry Morton Stanley’s expedition reached the Yambuya waterfalls in the Congo
1951 - Heavyweight Joe Louis of LaFayette, Alabama scored his last knock out victory
1969 – The Southern country music, variety, and comedy show, Hee Haw first aired on CBS television and continued unabated for 21 years.
1970 – Black mobs rioted in Miami, Florida.
1971 – Black mobs rioted in Jacksonville, Florida.
1983 - The US Supreme Court struck down state and local restrictions on abortion
